Unlimited Kilometres Car Hire in Australia: Is It Worth It?

Unlimited kilometres car hire in Australia can simplify a road-trip budget, but it is not automatically the cheapest option. A capped rate may suit a short city stay; a longer itinerary needs a closer look at the distance allowance and excess-kilometre charge. Compare the cost for the journey you actually plan to drive.

What unlimited kilometres means

An unlimited-kilometre rate removes the distance cap for the rental under its agreed terms. It does not remove fuel costs, tolls, return deadlines or restrictions on where the vehicle can go. Keep the rate conditions with your booking confirmation rather than relying on a search-result label.

Avis explains in its Australian reservations FAQ that bookings with limited kilometres specify a daily allowance and an additional-kilometre cost. Treat that as a provider example: check the exact allowance on every quote, including the vehicle class and pickup branch.

Compare capped and unlimited quotes in four steps

1. Estimate your whole itinerary

Add the drive between overnight stops, airport transfers, day trips and local errands. Then add a distance buffer that reflects how flexible your plans are. A direct city-to-city route can understate a holiday itinerary if you intend to visit beaches or national parks along the way.

2. Confirm how the allowance is counted

Ask whether the allowance is per rental day, pooled across the booking or set as a total for the trip. Do not assume unused kilometres carry forward. If you extend the rental, ask how the extra time changes both the allowance and the rate.

3. Calculate the distance charge

For a pooled allowance, the calculation is: extra kilometres = the greater of zero or planned distance minus included distance. Multiply those extra kilometres by the quoted per-kilometre charge. If the allowance resets daily, calculate each day's excess separately using the provider's rules.

Illustrative example, not a market quote: a four-day rental costs A$240 and includes 600 kilometres in total. Your itinerary is 900 kilometres and the extra charge is A$0.30 per kilometre. The distance charge is A$90, making the rental A$330 before other costs. An otherwise equivalent unlimited quote at A$310 would be A$20 cheaper. At 650 kilometres, the capped quote would instead total A$255.

4. Compare the remaining inclusions

Check the same car class, dates, pickup point, fuel policy and optional extras. Keep the deposit separate from the rental price when budgeting: it affects available funds even when it is a refundable hold. Our rental car deposit guide explains the questions to ask.

Check route permission separately

Before booking, send the provider your intended route if it includes remote areas, unsealed roads, ferries or a state border. Ask for written confirmation of any restrictions and permissions. An unlimited-distance label alone does not tell you whether that journey is permitted.

If the trip finishes at a different branch, also compare the return arrangement using our one-way car hire guide. A distance allowance and a one-way fee answer different parts of the quote.

Which rate suits your trip?

  • Short city visit: a capped quote can work when your planned distance is comfortably below the allowance.
  • Touring holiday: compare an unlimited quote when detours could push the trip beyond the cap.
  • Extended stay: request the full allowance for the rental period rather than multiplying a headline daily figure. See our long-term rental guide for other checks.

At pickup and return, photograph the odometer and retain the condition report. This gives you a record to compare with any distance charge on the final invoice.

Find providers for your route

Browse car hire providers by location, then request a capped and unlimited quote for the same itinerary. Ask each provider to state the included kilometres, excess rate and route permissions in writing before you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Australian hire car include unlimited kilometres?

No. Check the rate conditions for your vehicle and branch; a quote may have a daily or total distance allowance.

Is unlimited kilometres always better value?

No. It depends on the price difference and expected distance. Compare the capped price plus your calculated extra-distance charge with an equivalent unlimited quote.

Can I drive anywhere with unlimited kilometres?

The distance allowance does not establish route permission. Confirm restrictions for your itinerary with the provider before booking.

What should I check if I add another rental day?

Ask the provider to confirm the revised price, return time and kilometre allowance before extending the booking.
